Fifty years and counting: a family celebration on the shores of Lake Ontario

By Liz Cooper

Family is so important. It seems trite to say, because, duh, obviously family is important. But it really is. The roughness of the world, always present, has never been more apparent than now. 2020 can go to hell, as the kids have been saying.

But 2020 has also had some positives. If you’re one of the lucky ones you’re working from home and spending more time with your family. We’re being forced to sit back and take stock of the things for which we’re grateful. And family is often number one on that list. Again, if you’re one of the lucky ones.

Sorry for the slightly gloomy beginning, I’m feeling philosophical and truly thankful for my own family and circumstances. This was just a preamble to this sun-soaked, rainbow coloured family shoot on the waterfront in Kingston. Looking at these pictures reminds me to feel grateful.

Julie and Jim have been together for 50 years and this shoot was booked to commemorate that milestone. I love seeing their original wedding photograph from five decades ago in the UK. I like imagining them all full of excitement and hope and possibilities for the future. And then that sense of adventure that allowed them to make the leap and travel across an ocean to live in Canada.

They landed here in Kingston, on the shores of Lake Ontario and got on with the business of building a life for themselves. And what a life they made! In the same house for 38 years, a treed and waterfront lot, perfect for raising their two kids and hosting their pack of grandchildren. When put in those terms, it really seems like a fairy tale; they’ve definitely found their castle, or rather, made their own through the trials and joys of five decades spent together.  It’s a beautiful life, one that is fifty years and counting in the making. All the more reason to get beautiful photos to remember it by.

Photographs that depict the fruits of love's labours and a life well spent, are never a bad idea. Book your family session today and start recording the life that you’ve worked so hard to make beautiful.
